Don't be a dental cripple.¹ With years of practice in sports dentistry, Dr. James A. He also tells of a basketball player who sustained injury from a blow to the mouth from another player's elbow. Fracture of the bone surrounding the upper four front teeth required resetting and fixing the bone fragment as well as root canal therapy and crowns on all four front teeth. A wide range of protection. The Academy of Sports Dentistry lists some 40 sports in which participants would benefit from mouth protection.²

 

Mouth injuries are not limited to just the teeth. The tongue, lips and cheeks can be lacerated by the sharp edges of teeth. Shock to your teeth can be transmitted to bones in the head which can result in mild to serious concussion. A blow to the chin can transmit shocks to the temporal bone which houses nerve trunks, blood supply to the brain, as well as auditory and balance mechanisms. A well-designed mouthguard can lessen the chances of jaw fractures by absorbing the energy of a traumatic blow to the chin.³ The proper kind of mouthguard can protect a lot more than just your teeth.

A classic study in 1964 recognized that head and neck injuries, as well as dental/facial injuries, were dramatically reduced by the use of mouthguards.⁴

In football, where mouth protection is mandatory, only .07% of all injuries involved teeth or the oral cavity. However, in basketball, where mouth protection is NOT mandatory, a huge 34% of injuries are to the teeth and mouth.⁵ The relationship of injuries to the use of mouthguards has also been observed in any active sport where there is the possibility of contact with another player, game equipment, the floor, or the ground. Athletes who are concerned for their own safety should wear this device.
